The U.S.–Iran story changed again today.

Earlier signals from New York appeared to reduce the chances of a formal diplomatic meeting before September 30.

Then Donald Trump provided a new piece of information:

The United States and Iran have been talking today.

Trump said discussions are continuing and that he believes the two sides will eventually reach a settlement.

Yet the prediction market still assigns only around a 14% probability to a qualifying U.S.–Iran diplomatic meeting by September 30.

ProbGap remains at 24%.

Contact is now more than hypothetical

When we published PG-0008, the case for being above the market rested largely on the diplomatic environment.

Both sides were in New York.

Iranian officials had indicated willingness to pursue diplomacy.

Regional intermediaries were active.

And Trump had publicly left the door open to engagement.

Today's statement adds something more concrete:

communication is actually taking place.

That doesn't mean a qualifying meeting has happened.

But it matters for a contract with only days remaining.

The resolution rules still matter

There is an important distinction here.

Informal communication, messages through intermediaries or unspecified talks do not necessarily satisfy the prediction market's resolution criteria.

The contract concerns a qualifying diplomatic meeting between the United States and Iran.

So Trump's statement that the sides have been talking should not be treated as a resolution.

This is still an open forecast.

But the probability question is different.

We aren't asking whether today's contact already resolves the market.

We're asking whether today's contact increases the probability that qualifying diplomacy occurs before September 30.

We think it does.

A volatile information environment

Today's sequence is also a useful example of why short-duration geopolitical forecasts can change quickly.

Earlier reporting suggested the immediate diplomatic path was narrowing.

Trump then publicly confirmed continued communication between the two sides.

Those aren't necessarily contradictory.

A presidential meeting may remain unlikely while lower-level or senior diplomatic engagement continues.

And the prediction market does not specifically require a Trump–Pezeshkian summit.

That's an important distinction.

Why we're keeping 24%

We considered whether today's earlier negative signals justified cutting PG-0008.

The latest information changes that calculation.

Trump's confirmation of ongoing communication provides enough evidence for us to leave our forecast unchanged.

Our position remains:

Market: 14%

ProbGap: 24%

Gap: +10 pp

We still believe no qualifying meeting by September 30 is the substantially more likely outcome.

But we think the market is assigning too little probability to the diplomatic window that remains.

There is active communication.

Both sides have incentives to explore a pathway forward.

And only one qualifying diplomatic meeting is required before the deadline.

What would change our forecast?

The next signal could be decisive.

Confirmation that senior U.S. and Iranian officials are arranging direct talks would move our probability materially higher.

Evidence that current communication is entirely indirect — combined with officials ruling out meetings before September 30 — would move it lower.

And every day without progress matters because the deadline is approaching rapidly.

For now:

The market says 14%.

ProbGap says 24%.

The gap remains +10 percentage points.

The forecast stays unchanged.
